LĪHU‘E – The Kauaʻi Police Department (KPD) is advising residents and visitors to remain vigilant following an increase in fuel thefts from vehicles reported across the island.

Recent incidents involve suspects cutting gas tank lines from parked vehicles, and drilling holes in gas tanks. These thefts have occurred in residential neighborhoods, business parking lots, hiking trail entrances, and other locations.

In addition to the financial loss of stolen fuel, victims may discover damage to fuel tanks, fuel lines, or gas caps, resulting in costly repairs.

KPD encourages the public to take the following precautions to reduce the risk of becoming a victim:

  • Park vehicles in well-lit areas whenever possible.
  • Secure vehicles in garages or behind locked gates if available.
  • Install motion-activated lighting or security cameras around parking areas.
  • Avoid leaving vehicles unattended for extended periods with full fuel tanks when possible.
  • Report suspicious persons or vehicles observed lingering near parked vehicles, especially during nighttime hours.

KPD would like to remind residents never to confront suspicious individuals. Instead, report suspicious activity immediately by calling KPD Dispatch at (808) 241-1711. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers Kaua’i at (808) 246-8300, submit a tip at crimestopperskauai.org, or use the Crime Stoppers Kaua’i P3 Tips Mobile App. If a theft is actively occurring or there is an emergency, call 911 immediately.

The Kauaʻi Police Department appreciates the public's assistance and cooperation in helping keep our communities safe. Prompt reporting of suspicious activity can play a vital role in preventing crime and identifying those responsible.
