11:15 a.m., Sept. 9, UPDATE: Traffic Advisory Due to Hurricane Lowell

Kūhiō Highway is now open.

On Kaumualiʻi Highway in Kalāheo, a very long line of motorists waiting to fill gas has formed on the highway. 

Road Closures:

  • Kaumauli’i Highway (vicinity of Moi Road and Puolo Road) has traffic being diverted to Hanapēpē Road.
  • Hoone Road in Poʻipū is impassable due to debris.

Traffic lights are non-functioning island-wide. When a traffic light is out, motorists must treat the intersection as a four-way stop.

Crews are working on our roadways to complete essential infrastructure repairs. Please drive carefully to ensure their safety.

Traffic Advisory Due to Hurricane Lowell

LĪHU‘E –  The Kauaʻi Police Department is advising the public about road conditions in the aftermath of Hurricane Lowell, which has caused island-wide road closures. Crews from Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation and Department of Public Works are responding to road hazards from flooding, fallen trees, landslides, downed power lines, and debris.

Road Closures:

  • Kūhiō Highway/Route 56 (north of Hanalei Bridge to Hanalei Dolphin Restaurant)
  • Kūhiō Highway/Route 56 (Waikoko to Lumahai Beach)
  • Kūhiō Highway/Route 56 (Kahiliholo Road to Kalihiwai Bridge)
  • Kūhiō Highway/Route 56 in Kīlauea (Traffic being diverted to Kolo Road)
  • Hoone Road in Poʻipū is impassable due to debris.

Partial Road Closures:

  • Kaumualiʻi Highway/Route 50 (Alternating one-lane traffic west of Kauaʻi Humane Society)

Māluhia Road (Tunnel of Trees) is now open in both directions.

Motorists are urged to stay off the roads and limit travel to essential needs only in order to allow crews to assess damage from Hurricane Lowell, clear debris, and restore power quickly. Do not drive through flooded roadways or around barricades and stay away from downed power lines.

Officials remind the public to use 9-1-1 only for life-threatening or time-critical emergencies. Calls to 9-1-1 for weather updates or general road conditions can significantly delay emergency response. To report non-emergency road hazards, contact KPD Dispatch (non-emergency) at 808-241-1711.
