LĪHU‘E – The Kaua’i Police Department (KPD) is alerting the public to a scam circulating via text message that falsely claims recipients have an unpaid traffic citation and appears to originate from a named police officer.
The message may claim that the recipient must appear before the District Court of Hawaiʻi on a specified date and time, and that failure to appear will result in penalties such as an arrest warrant issuance, driverʻs license suspension, vehicle impoundment, enforcement via wage garnishment, and asset seizure.
There may be a web link included in the text message for the recipient to click on to resolve the matter.
These messages are NOT legitimate.
