Loading and Unloading Your Bike on the Kauaʻi Bus

Use the bicycle rack at your own risk!

• The Kauaʻi Bus will not be responsible for any damages to your bicycle or anything falling off your bicycle.
• The Kauaʻi Bus Drivers reserve the right to deny a bicycle if they deem it to be a safety hazard.
• It is the responsibility of The Kauaʻi Bus Driver to determine if your bike creates a safety hazard for safe bus operation.

What constitutes a safety hazard?

• Bikes with child seats, saddle bags, or other accessories that blocks either The Kauaʻi Bus Driver’s vision or the usage of the bus’s headlights.
• Bikes loaded backwards into the bike rack.
• Loose objects attached to the bike that could shake or fly off.
• Bikes that do not fit properly into the wheel slots.

Bike wheels must fit into the slots of the Bike Rack. If your wheels do not fit, then your bicycle cannot be safely transported and will be denied.

Bike, eBike and Scooter Limitations:

• Bike Weight: Max 55 pounds
• Bike Wheelbase: Max 48 inches
• Bike Wheel Diameter: Min 16 inches to Max 29 inches
• Bike Tire Width: Max 3.2 inches
• Battery must be completely sealed

Locking of your bicycle to any part of the bus or bike rack is not permitted. You may lock the wheel of your bicycle to the frame of your bicycle. This must be done prior to the bus arriving at the bus stop to avoid delays.

Safety

• When waiting to load a bike, always remain on the curb until the bus has come to a complete stop.
• Be sure to always follow The Kauaʻi Bus Driver's instructions especially when proceeding to the front of the bus to get to the Bike Rack.
• Be careful of support arm tension.
• Always close Bike Rack when not in use.
• Never approach the bus from the street side because the operator may not see you which could result in a serious accident
• Bicycle racks are designed to be used from the front of the vehicle.
• Loading or unloading a bicycle from the street side may cause injury or death.

Types of Bikes Allowed

• All buses are equipped with either a 2- or 3-capacity bike rack.
• ONLY single seat, two-wheeled bikes of standard size that conform to the bike rack specifications are allowed on The Kauaʻi Bus.
• Tandem, stretched out, or custom bikes and bikes with oversized wheels, three or more wheels, trailers, or those powered by gasoline engines will NOT BE ALLOWED on The Kauaʻi Bus.
• Electric bikes with a sealed battery compartment which conform to the bike rack specifications and other safety issues are allowed.
• Bikes with child seats, saddle bags, or accessories that block the driver’s vision or headlight WILL NOT BE ALLOWED on The Kauaʻi Bus.
• Motorized bicycles with a combustible engine WILL NOT BE ALLOWED.

Loading

• When waiting to load a bike, ALWAYS remain on the curb until The Kauaʻi Bus has come to a complete stop.
• ALWAYS be sure The Kauaʻi Bus Driver acknowledges you before you step in front of The Kauaʻi Bus.
• NEVER approach The Kauaʻi Bus from the street side because the Driver may not see you, which could result in a serious accident.
• Bicycle racks are designed to be used from the front of the vehicle.
• Prepare your bike for loading. Remove water bottles, pumps or any loose items that might fall off. This must be done prior to the bus arriving at the bus stop to avoid delays.
• You must load bike from curbside or from the front of the bus, never street side. Do not step into oncoming traffic to load your bike!
• Squeeze the handle up to release the latch, and then lower the bike rack with one hand while you hold the bike with the other hand. Do not drop the bike rack!
• Lift the bike onto the rack, fitting wheels into the proper slots.
• Each slot is labeled for front and rear wheels. Please load your bike in the slot closest to the bus first, if vacant.
• Pull the support arm out and over the front tire. The support arm hook should rest beyond the highest point of the tire closest to the frame.
• Make sure the support arm is resting on the tire and not the fender or frame.

Unloading

• Upon exiting The Kauaʻi Bus ALWAYS advise the Kauaʻi Bus Driver that you will be removing your bike.
• Before stepping in front of the bus, wave to re-inform the Driver that you will be stepping in front of The Kauaʻi Bus.
• ALWAYS go to the nearest curbside. NEVER cross in front of The Kauaʻi Bus to the street side as passing traffic cannot see you.
• Bicycle racks are designed to be used from the front of the vehicle.
• Raise the support arm off the tire. The support arm automatically folds down to a secure position. Please lower this gently, do not just let go of the support arm.
• Lift the bike out of the bike rack.
• Squeeze the handle and fold up the bike rack if there are no bikes on the rack and no one else is waiting to load a bike. The bike rack locks in place with a snap so you know that it is secure.
• Step away from The Kauaʻi Bus with your bike.
• Always step to the curb for your own safety and to allow The Kauaʻi Bus to proceed onward.
• Do not step into oncoming traffic to unload your bike!
