Firefighters extinguish brush fires in Anahola Thursday evening

ANAHOLA  – Kaua‘i Fire Department firefighters extinguished multiple brush fires in Anahola on Thursday, May 2.

No injuries and no damaged structures were reported. However, approximately 5 acres were scorched.

“Thank you to our first responders for taking action last night and to our community members who reported the incident. With this fire under investigation, the community must remain vigilant in our efforts to prevent brush fires,” said KFD Chief Michael Gibson. “Brush fires have the potential to spread quickly, cause devastation to our public spaces, and threaten our community.”

With arson suspected, KPD urges the public to stay vigilant. If you witness a fire or if it is an emergency, call 911.

“Arson is a serious crime that carries penalties of imprisonment and fines,” stated Assistant Chief Kalani Ke. “Intentionally setting fires is a threat to community safety and the environment. We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately by calling 911.”

Shortly after 5:40 p.m. on Thursday, firefighters were dispatched to reports of multiple fires in Anahola near Ehukai Road.

Firefighters with the Kaiākea and Kapa‘a fire stations, Rescue 3, Air 1, Tanker 1, the Kaua‘i Police Department, and the on-duty Battalion Chief responded to the incident.

According to a preliminary report, KFD personnel arrived on the scene at Anahola near Ehukai Road and quickly extinguished three small brush fires. However, a 4.3-acre brush fire was also reported in an area called “Crack 14,” near the ocean. After Air 1 dropped approximately 20 water drops on the fire, firefighters used 3,200 gallons of foam and water to extinguish the blaze.

The scene was cleared at approximately 9:50 p.m. Kaiākea firefighters returned to the scene shortly after midnight to ensure that the fire was fully extinguished and no hotspots emerged.
