LĪHU‘E —The Kauai Fire Department (KFD) is collaborating with the Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency with comprehensive communications training this week, utilizing the Compact Rapid Deployable (CRD) system.

This system is crucial for enabling communication among first responders and Emergency Dispatchers.

“The CRD serves as a backup for data and cell connections, especially in remote areas with limited cell capabilities,” said KFD Chief Michael Gibson. “It's particularly useful if a storm disrupts internet and infrastructure on any part of the island. However, the CRD is not a permanent solution for areas without cell service. Instead, it's a vital tool for first responders to connect during disasters when other communication methods fail.”

The CRD is also capable of multi-day searches and rescues in remote areas.

These ongoing training sessions for the KFD Communications team highlight the department's proactive approach to staying ahead of technological advancements in emergency response situations.
