LĪHU‘E – The Office of Economic Development is launching the Youth Climate Practitioners class in the upcoming Spring 2024 semester, an initiative aimed at inspiring and equipping high school students to become champions of sustainability.

In collaboration with local organizations and businesses, this program offers a unique opportunity for students to actively engage in shaping a more eco-friendly and resilient future for the Kaua‘i community.

“The class is not your typical classroom experience,” said Nalani Brun, director of the Office of Economic Development. “It’s a transformative journey for high school students to explore their role as change-makers in the fight against climate change.”

The program will be hosted by the County’s sustainability coordinator and is designed to provide hands-on, real-world experiences that go beyond textbooks, fostering a deep understanding of sustainability goals at both the island and state levels. A mix of in-person or virtual classes will be held every Wednesday after 3 p.m., with occasional weekend sessions based on availability of community partners. The class is intended to begin January 31, 2024; however, a firm date will be announced directly to registered students.

“The County is dedicated to growing responsibly to meet the needs of current and future generations without depleting resources,” said Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami. “This Spring class is part of our commitment to fostering sustainability and empowering the next generation of environmental leaders.”

Limited spots are available to attend the Youth Climate Practitioners Class. Interested students should complete the following form by Friday, January 5, 2024: https://forms.gle/39Wwfv2TJByHGC9A9.

Key highlights of the Youth Climate Practitioners Class are as follows:

  1. Field Trips Beyond the Classroom: Students will have the chance to step out of traditional learning environments and visit various organizations across the island. These excursions aim to showcase real sustainability practices in action and expose students to a range of career options.
  2. Green Business Certification Project: As part of the program, students will collaborate with local businesses to implement eco-friendly practices and guide them through the process of obtaining certification from Hawai‘i’s Green Business Program. This not only benefits the businesses but also empowers students to make a tangible impact on the local economy.
  3. State and County Sustainability Goals: Participants will delve into the State and County’s sustainability goals, including the Aloha+ Challenge, gaining insights into the strategic objectives that are shaping the future of our state and island. This exploration provides a comprehensive understanding of the broader sustainability landscape and encourages critical thinking about our role in achieving these goals.
  4. Paid Learning Opportunity: Students who complete the program will be eligible for a $500 stipend, recognizing their commitment to creating positive change in our community.

The program is more than an educational experience; it’s a call to action. By engaging high school students in hands-on sustainability projects, the class aims to cultivate a generation of informed, motivated, and proactive individuals who will lead the way toward a greener, more sustainable future.
