Feb. 21 UPDATE: The 30-year-old pedestrian has been identified as Kailon Tyndzik, of Wailua. He succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, Feb. 20, marking the second traffic-related fatality on Kaua‘i this year. The Kaua‘i Police Department extends heartfelt condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time.

Feb. 14 UPDATE: On Thursday, Feb. 13, police located an unattended vehicle believed to be involved in the incident. Later that evening, at approximately 8:30 p.m., officers located and arrested the driver, Salvin Hilario, a 54-year-old man with no permanent address. Hilario was arrested for the offenses of Negligent Injury in the First Degree, Leaving the Scene of a Collision with Serious Bodily Injury, Driving Without a Valid Driver's License, Reckless Driving, and Inattention to Driving. Hilario is currently being held in KPD cellblock.

The pedestrian remains in critical condition.

KPD thanks the public for their vigilance and support in providing information to aid the investigation.

LĪHUʻE – Police are searching for the driver involved in a hit-and-run that occurred Wednesday evening in Līhu‘e.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2025, police responded to a traffic incident on Nāwiliwili Road near Nokekula Street. According to preliminary reports, a 30-year-old male pedestrian was in the southbound lane when he was struck by a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle did not stop to render aid and left before first responders arrived. The description of the vehicle is unknown at this time.

The pedestrian was transported to Wilcox Medical Center and later flown to Queens Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.

Nāwiliwili Road was closed in both directions for approximately one and a half hours while KPD’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation.

Police are asking for information from drivers who were traveling on Nāwiliwili Road last night between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to call Officer Himongala at (808) 241-1617.
