Electronic Waste Contest Prize Give Away Held Wednesday, May 4

The Public Works Solid Waste Division distributed prizes to the lucky winners of the March Electronic Waste (eWaste) contest on Wednesday, May 4.

Students from all over the island were tasked with turning in eWaste to Resource Recovery Solutions who operate the Puhi Metals Recycling Facility through the month of May for a chance to win.

This year’s theme was to get back out outside and adventure. Many of the prizes were for adventure tours including zip lining, ATV rides, Na Pali Boat tours, and horse back riding. Some prizes were purchased for younger students that may not have been able to participate in the age restricted tours including Fun Factory gift cards and iPads. “For a lot of local families these tours may be out of reach due to the cost, so we were overjoyed to be allowed to offer them to the students.” Noted The County’s Recycling Programs Coordinator Keola Aki.

The contest is funded by a State Department of Health grant awarded to the County to promote eWaste recycling on Kaua‘i via the State’s eWaste Recycling Law which mandates that electronic manufacturers provide funding to recycle eWaste in the State.

The Solid Waste Division appreciates all the parents and students that participated in making a difference on Kaua‘i by keeping eWaste out of our landfill. The Division would also like to thank the Department of Health for their support as well as the tour agencies that provided free or discounted tour packages for the students.

Electronic waste recycling is available on Kaua‘i Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 3:30 at the Puhi Metals Recycling Facility located at 3951 Puhi Road.

Large Loads

For loads consisting of 10 or more items, it is recommended that a list be made itemizing how much of each type of eWaste is being dropped off. Processing time for large loads may be significant without a prepared list.

***Unusually large electronics may be subject to a fee of $0.50 cents per pound to cover the labor involved in packaging them for cargo containers. Large items include items that cannot fit onto a standard 48" x 40" pallet (excluding televisions), such as commercial copiers and industrial electronics. Please call Puhi Metals at 245-6919 if you have questions about the items you are dropping off.
